Arroyo was rescued off the northern end of the 110 Freeway in Los Angeles, CA on 10/23. I was driving home from work when I saw him and a littermate getting ready to step into traffic. Was able to pull over and save him, but not his calico sister. We estimate he’s about four weeks old. He visited the vet this week and was given a clean bill of health and lots of love. Plans to just foster him were dashed when he curled up on my chest and fell asleep.

Tonight, after a long bout of sweating over the stove (literally!), I have made japchae (jop-chay), a very popular Korean traditional dish that's a lot like bibimbap. It's fairly well known by people who know a little about Korea (and watch Korean dramas).
It's also delicious.

Here Aura is only eight weeks old. She is my third cat ever, my first female, and my first Ragdoll. After I lost my sweet, lovable, Persian Oscar, I thought life would never be the same. I set out trying to find someone half as sweet as he was. I had never heard of Ragdolls before, so I like to think that Oscar lead me to the breed and to Aura, who was born the same week Oscar passed away.

| My brother:) |
[11 Nov 2009|06:57pm] |
And, surprisingly, there we have a smiley face!
Daniel has become a participant in Memphis's own Jericho Project, which is a local foundation that helps inmates who have mental illness and drug abuse problems. People like Daniel, who have mental illness and self-medicate by abusing drugs, rarely get help. They don't have jobs, they don't have insurance, their families can't control them because they are legally adults, the state won't help them because they are legally adults, mental illness has a lot of stigma, and there are people who don't want their hard earned money going to take care of crazy loser deadbeats, by which they don't mean MY brother, just you know, crazy loser deadbeats, the LEGAL definition of which always seems to include my brother somehow.
So the only place for people who are mentally ill and not being treated and also present with substance abuse is usually jail, because both conditions tend to make people run afoul of the law. In jail, they're monitored, they have to stay where they are, they are forced to take their prescriptions. They also are prey to more violent criminals, don't get psychiatric treatment, substance abuse treatment, or job training. So once they are released, guess where they end up? Yes, points awarded to everyone who said "back in jail."
This was the path of my brother's life. I saw it spinning out in front of him and could do nothing for him. And no one would help him. Well, not exactly, it turns out...
Jericho Project's goal is to work to help people whose "contact with the justice system is related to untreated mental illness." Their goal is to create a comprehensive system where there aren't breaks in care, and they get continuous treatment, continuous help. Today, thanks to Jericho Project, Daniel moved out of 201 Poplar and in to a halfway house. He is entering substance abuse treatment, and will continue to be treated for his mental illness. There are people who are not me who are committed to Daniel's well-being. Before he can leave this halfway house, he will have a job, and savings enough to move in to his own place.
That unfamiliar sensation I'm feeling is, I believe, hope.

This is my sweet baby copper. I found him not long after he was born. His mom is my Mother’s cat Cloie and she is a great mother! He is now at the stage where he likes to explore but not to far away from Mom. I was taking pictures of him and was lucky enough to snap one with his little tounge out. He is sooo fluffy and his tail is about two inches long!!

| Wouldn't be me if... |
[10 Nov 2009|10:18pm] |
I wasn't thinking things were more difficult than they were. I went over my student handbook today. It's not a 78.5 to pass but a 77.5. I'm only 2.2% points from passing this nursing class.
I studied today and got about halfway through one of the chapters that'll be on the test. I also met with my lab partner and studied for the competency (we have to do basic head to toe exam). Tomorrow we're going to meet again to go over the material for the test.
I also figured out who I go through for financial aide next semester. Even though I'm an LCCC and CSU student I am considered a CSU student and get my financial aide through them. So even though I'm not taking any CSU classes next semester I still fill out paperwork and get my aide through them. I went to the CSU office at LCCC to pick up the paperwork...and they were out. Will have to go back probably next week, which is fine because my schedule should be set by then and I can turn it in right away instead of filling it out, keeping it at home for a week and then turning it in.
The person who is suppose to come and look over my vechicle and assess the damage/take pictures will be here tomorrow. This is a nerve-wracking process. Even though I know the other person is at fault and that I did nothing wrong it still annoying that their insurance company has to 'decide on fault' and that they have tried to get me to admit it was my fault. Hopefully my car will get fixed soon, cause I don't like driving around with a huge dent in my door.
All in all I'm doing pretty good.
